During the 16th century, the island of Hvar came under attack from the Ottoman Turks. Hektorović, one of the local nobles, undertook to fortify his house so that it could act as shelter for the local citizens.
This island dreamer and one of the most popular islanders through the history built his Tvrdalj like the summer residence.He began in 1514 and carried on building for the rest of his life.A series of inscriptions are set into walls of the mansion in Latin and Croatian. Those in Croatian are considered to be some of the oldest extant.
With the pigeon loft in the main tower and a fish pond, he arrange Tvrdalj like a home for creatures of the sky as well as the sea and earth. The house was built in simple unadorned style, both because Hektorović had a taste for rusticity and because he didn’t want to provoke commoners with a display of lordly luxury.
Present in the old town are several architectural vestiges representing a variety of styles which reflect the different historical periods the city has gone through.
Most of the ancient historic coves no longer exist or function as modern ports. Stari Grad as the oldest Croatian town was an important Hellenism port, but the modern tourism plans changed coastline and it is now safe sailing destination.
While agriculture was the major economic activity in many island towns, fishing also was very important, something we lost while massive tourism has increased. Fishing communities between some families have been the beating heart of Jelsa for hundreds of years. Their ancestors' craftsmanship and knowledge still lives on within some of new generation.

In 19th century a small town of Jelsa was at the peak of its economic power, in the industrial, agricultural, cultural, political, and above all the maritime sense, its fleet was the strongest in Central Dalmatia. Niko Dubokovic is a man who did much to transform the fortunes of Hvar island and Jelsa. This ocean-going sea captain showed outstanding nautical skills while still very young.
1535. this parish church of St. Fabian and Sebastian mentioned in the Hvar Statute as the church of St. Mary was fortified by townspeople. It was protection against the Turkish attacks of 1571. Refugees from the mainland, fleeing the Turks, came to Jelsa and brought with them a wooden statue of the Madonna which now adorns the main altar.

From fishing and agriculture this small town developed into a shipbuilding and maritime center, especially during the 19th century. The town prospered, and became the administrative capital for the central municipality of the island of Hvar. The port and break-waters were begun around 1830, after which the reclamation of marshy land started, and the town park was created.
Our Lady of Health is the patron saint of Jelsa and its surrounding villages, guarding against various illnesses. In honor of a centuries-long tradition the villagers from the central part of the Island gather together every year on November 21 to celebrate Holy Mass.

One can usually find the center of a town or village by driving towards the parish church, although many towns and village cores feature two or more churches and chapels.
