Velo Grablje was established in the 15th century. Today it has preserved its cultural and historical monuments and some of which date from prehistoric times.
Lime kilns were structures in which limestone was heated to a high temperature to produce quicklime. As the pictures show a particularly well preserved example of a lime kiln can be seen on a big slope nearby the Stari Grad.
Through the years this village became depopulated, but nature has been left pretty much undisturbed, so you could say it’s an untouched ecological paradise.
Dry stone walls have been traditionally used as arable land and pasture boundaries. It was very hard work for local farmers; they had to move rocks and stones to clear space if they wanted to grow olive trees and grapevines.
